Google Publishing Download Link for Google Chrome in Its Home Page

Tuesday, September 2, 2008
I have installed Google Chrome and started to experience it. As of now I noticed that Google itself started to promote their Google Chrome product by placing Donwload link for Google Chrome in its home page.
  • Its look like full screen mode of firefox.
  • Incognito - Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.
  • Bookmarking features in Google chrome are more flexible to use.
  • While openning new tab - It will have the thumbnail for most visited websites, its very useful to reach the closed taps immediately.

Google to launch Chrome web browser on Tuesday

Mountain View (CA) – Being Google has its advantages, of course – for example the ability to completely remove certain pages that accidentally went online, were stored in the search engine’s cache and may reveal more information than Google intended to.

Google’s search engine cache has become one of the most valuable research features of Google Search, since it enables users to travel back in time and find pages that may not exist anymore. Dell has made its experiences in the past with unannounced products that were apparently put online for test purposes and got indexed before the company removed such pages again. Or, remember the recent controversy about the age of Chinese gymnasts whose published age on cached pages did not match their currently published age?

A similar hiccup apparently happened to Google itself when it briefly published the download of the new Chrome browser at http://gears.google.com/chrome/?hl=en exactly at 12:00 am PST, earlier today. A search for “Google Chrome” and “Google Gears” points to a cached page, which, however, is not available anymore. It may have been an intentional leak or an accidental leak, but the fact that the page has been removed from the search engine cache as quickly as it was published may raise eye browse here and there.

Anyone who wants to see a preview of the browser can jump over to Google Blogoscoped, which managed to grab a few screenshots of the browser, before the page disappeared. These images in fact reveal that Chrome will have a user interface that is reduced to a minimum and focus on an “omnibar” search auto-completion feature, a homepage that has tiles of nine homepages, applications that are usually accessed through the browser, but can be added as applications to the Windows Start Menu as well as anonymous browsing support and a Download manager.

Google To Launch A New Web Browser - Google Chrome

Google is launching a new web browser- Google Chrome, an open source browser based on Webkit and powered by Google Gears. The Webkit engine is also used by Apple's Safari and Nokia among others, to render web pages. JavaScript execution is handled by V8, yet another new high performance JavaScript engine in the mold of TraceMonkey and SquirrelFish, with dynamic code generation and optimisation and a precise memory management for fast garbage collection. Chrome has also incorporated Google's Gears as standard, giving web applications in Chrome access to database, geolocation and desktop integration.

One of its features highlight an "incognito" mode that lets you browse the web in complete privacy because it doesn't record any of your activity. Google has stated that Chrome will be an open source application, with the terms described indicating a BSD or Apache permissive licence. A beta version for Windows will be released on September 2nd with Mac and Linux versions being developed. Google Chrome update: First screenshot of Google Chrome

The Web site for Google's new open-source Chrome browser is slowly waking up. As I first began writing this post, there was a logo, a single screenshot (below), a link to a broken video, and a non-functioning download link. The page now redirects to Google.com, though

Google Chrome - Google's Finally Launching Its Own Browser

Monday, September 1, 2008
So much for a quiet Labor Day off. Google Blogoscoped has news of Google Chrome, a new browser that Google plans to release. More coverage can also be found on Techmeme. No -- it's not just a rumor. Google tells me that it is indeed a real browser it plans to release. Expect more news to come when we're back at things on a normal schedule tomorrow.
Postscript Barry Schwartz: The Google Blog now has a posted on the news. Basically, the Google browser is coming out in Beta for Windows users tomorrow.

Does the World need another Browser?

Google has announced another new tool. It’s called Chrome and is a browser. Why on earth do we need another browser? If they’d do one for Android (their mobile platform) I’d understand - but for OSes?!
They use Apple’s WebKit as a base rendering engine and put some -admittedly good- fluff around it. But what I don’t get is why they make another one. They would have been much more effective teaming up with Apple and Safari or the FireFox guys. It would have left the browser landscape untouched. This now adds yet again another thing you need to test when developing web applications. The cost alone worldwide to web development projects will be in the hundreds of millions. Just because Google thought it would be cool to have their own browser. I wonder if they ever thought of the follow-on-effect of their actions.
The only hope I have is that the WebKit engine they use remains unchanged. That would mean testing Chrome would test Safari and the other way round. That remains to be seen once the browser is out in the wild.
The ideas Google have and what they are trying to do is great but it’s just the wrong way. This smacks of a Microsoft stratagem and I also believe it will have a Microsoftish feel to it aka somewhat stale and big monopoly like.
As a tester I hope they will still come to their senses. We have enough browsers to have healthy competition and we have more than enough browsers to give testers a royal headache. So please not another cool browser!!!

You can download and print a 37 page PDF Comic book created by Google that tells a very comical story while at the same time unveils technical information about the new Google Chrome web browser.

Google Chrome: Is Google planning to release a web browser?

Rumors that Google plans to release a web browser have been circulating for years. Personally I've never placed much stock in them, because it's always made more sense to tme that Google would continue releasing plugins for existing browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer to allow users to take advantage of Google's web services. After all, that's what the company has done with the Google Toolbar, Google Gears, and the now-defunct Google Browser Sync.

But Philipp Lenssen at Google Blogoscoped has posted a comic book which he says comes straight from Google which seems to indicate that the search engine giant will indeed release a browser soon. Reportedly called Google Chrome, the browser will be based on the open source Webkit rendering engine. So what would Google Chrome have that you can't find in other web browsers?
  • Includes a brand new JavaScript virtual machine called V8
  • Tabs wil go above the window, not below the address bar
  • Location bar will support auto-complete functions and suggests web pages you've previously visited as well as suggested sites you haven't
  • Upon launch, you'll see an Opera-like speed dial with bookmarks and thumbnails for up to web sites
  • There will be a privacy mode that allows you to surf without saving any personal history (Microsoft is building a similar feature into Internet Explorer 8)
  • The browser will constantly download up to date information about web sites with malicious code
Chrome will also utilize Google Gears to allow you to save many web sites and applications for offline use. And web applications will be isolated from other browser tabs, so if Google Docs or another app crashes, your browser won't automatically close.

While I'm surprised to see Google getting into the browser space, I can't say I'm disappointed. It'll take a lot of work for any company to take market share away from Microsoft and Mozilla. But if anyone can do it, or at least offer some innovative ideas for the competition to copy, it's Google.

Update: It's official. Google is releasing a beta of Google Chrome for Windows tomorrow.
