SEO Optimization and Web Implementation Tools

Wednesday, September 17, 2008
As a blogger, SEO Strategist and partial web developer, I find myself using numerous tools to help optimize blogs/websites. Below are few great tools/services which help make my optimization and implementation tasks a lot more efficient:

Bust-a-Name: A very quick and intuitive way to determine the availability of a given domain name. Bust-a-Name also provides suggestions for new domain names based on inputted keywords.

If you're not a web designer and need a simple and professional way to implement a website then checkout Weebly. Weebly, is a free service which offers dozens of website templates which you can customize and upload to your own domain.

Microsoft AdCenter's Keyword Service Platform provides numerous keyword analysis data and tools such as Keyword extraction, suggestion, search buzz, monthly traffic, keyword categorization, geographic info, demographic info, monetization info (clicks, impressions, avg positions, CTR, CPC).

SEO Digger is a decent keyword gathering and research tool but what it really helps me with is determining a given site's overall theme and keyword focus. Apart from a list of search queries, wordtracker and overture results are also determined (keyword popularity calculated by Wordtracker.com). Data is also CSV-exportable.

Yahoo pipes can act as a very robust feed reader. It allows me to organize different blogs' data into a single source and apply numerous types of filters. Additionally I can combine all of the feed content from the blogs I write for and offer it to my readers as a single source rather than multiple feeds.

List of Professional Web Design Forums

Monday, September 15, 2008
Web Design related forums are a place where you interact with other designers, exchange ideas or discuss your first drafts. When you have a problem, you can post the issue, and then receive feedback on possible design or coding solutions from community members. This interaction is a great way to establish contacts and build relationships. Forums are used for networking and marketing purposes. They are practical places to solve problems and can serve as a form of social diversion.

What is a good forum?

As designers and developers, we choose a forum depending on its ability to approach our needs. In best case the forum should be large enough, moderators should be cooperative and the posts should be responded quickly. There is nothing worse than posting a thread on a forum and no one replies to it.

In forums, users develop a reputation over time. The forum software can be used to track this. Some forums allow users to rate each other as well. Also, the more you participate and the more professional input you bring to the community, the more other members will recognize you and respect your opinion.

The quality of the community is reflected by the level and depth of responses from community members. How well the forum is run has a direct impact on our ability to use it. The forum needs good moderation and clear guidelines. Even the design of the forum plays a role in our decision to use it. After all, every forum has its own personality.

The diversity of content on forums is immense. Often, advice takes the form of Q&A-discussions, but it can also take the form of articles, and tutorials as well. Threaded discussions are a huge part of forums, but some forums have areas that operate differently — marketplaces are an example, or design showcases.

Content Management Systems often have great forums for web designers. E.g. if you’re a Wordpress user, you may frequent the Wordpress Forums. There you can pose installation questions, share your recent themes, extensions, modifications and plugins and ask for a help in building a WordPress-template.

The type of career path you’ve chosen may lead you to forums as well. If you’re a freelancer then you may frequent forums such as the Freelance Switch Forum.

While such types of forums are of use to a web designer, there are forums specifically designed for working web design professionals. We’ve compiled a list below. We’d like to hear your experiences with these or other web design forums.

Web Design Forums

Sitepoint Forum
Sitepoint has a huge community of members, with over 250,000 members. It’s an excellent place to network, get programming tips, or practical business advice. IndiBlogger.in brings Delhi bloggers together

Avid bloggers to meet in India’s capital on Sep 6th 2008

IndiBlogger.in will be conducting its sixth blogger meet at Chitranjan Memorial Hall
C-405a, C R Park, Delhi, on the Saturday 6th of Sep 2008. The meet is open for all bloggers registered with IndiBlogger.in. Over 60 avid bloggers from Delhi have registered for the event so far.
Following the phenomenal success of the recently concluded blogger meets at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai the IndiBlogger team is pulling out all the stops for Delhi.

The previous IndiBlogger meetings received rave reviews on several well-established blogs. Sathish from sathishsays.com had this to say – “I presumed everyone might be having a dead serious look, with conversations about traffic, SEO and all that abnormal nonsense we would like to keep to our computers. However, I was dead wrong. The IndiBlogger team is a bunch of crazy people, hell bent on having fun.”

Renie Ravin, founder of IndiBlogger.in had this to say: "Most bloggers don't realize that they collectively form a highly influential media in the world today. With a little bit of collaborative thinking, Indian bloggers have the potential to change things for the better. Our pilot meet was at Bangalore and we achieved our objective of making the meeting both meaningful and fun.”

Get IndiBlogging
The website helps you find bloggers by name, city, language or user-generated tags (keywords). Members can organize local blogger meetings by coordinating with other bloggers in the directory. Every member in their directory needs to be approved first, as cleverly outlined on their site - "We've also added new submission guidelines for IndiBlogger, since we had many spammers trying to pass themselves off as blogs. Needless to say, their thinly veiled disguises failed to bypass our high-tech blog validation algorithms (our moderators)."

IndiBlogger.in
Launched in September 2007, IndiBlogger.in has over 5000 blogs registered in the directory, with the number of submissions from bloggers increasing every day. The IndiBlogger team attributes their success to the large community of bloggers who have supported their online as well as offline initiatives.

Google Releases Picasa 3.0 (and big changes for Picasa Web Albums)

Wednesday, September 3, 2008
September 3, 2008 - Google released Picasa version 3.0 and introduced a new "name tags" feature to help you automatically organize your photos based on who's in each picture. .

That's just the start. Picasa Web Albums now includes a new 'name tags' feature that helps organize your growing photo collection by people. Opt-in to name tags, and our technology automatically groups photos containing similar faces. Instead of asking you to painstakingly label pictures one-by-one, name tags lets you rapidly tag many photos at once. By doing so, you can easily find that photo of your cousin from two years ago; create a slideshow of you and your best friend, or share an album with everybody who appears in the photos. Take a look at this video to see name tags in action.

We've packed many other new features into Picasa 3. There's a slew of powerful new editing tools to retouch and restore photos, automatically detect and fix red-eye, or attractively add text to your images. Plus, there's plenty of the fun stuff -- we completely overhauled things like photo collages and slideshows, giving you more creative freedom over composition and layout. Not to mention a brand-new movie maker that can blend photos, video, webcam capture, and music to create customized movies that you can easily share on YouTube.

Google Publishing Download Link for Google Chrome in Its Home Page

Tuesday, September 2, 2008
I have installed Google Chrome and started to experience it. As of now I noticed that Google itself started to promote their Google Chrome product by placing Donwload link for Google Chrome in its home page.
  • Its look like full screen mode of firefox.
  • Incognito - Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.
  • Bookmarking features in Google chrome are more flexible to use.
  • While openning new tab - It will have the thumbnail for most visited websites, its very useful to reach the closed taps immediately.

Guys don't forget to post your reviews about Google Chrome.

Finally Google Chrome (BETA) for Windows was released - First post on net

I was keep on updated my blog about Google Chorme. Most of them got tensed coz of broken & redirected links, me too upset becasue of not able to give links to donwload google chorme to my blog visitors. Now the time is (00:30 - September 3, 2008) Indian Standard Time. Google was finally released they product of Google Chrome for Download. Google Launches Video Sharing for Business

Google has found a way to make money from video sharing — but not on YouTube. The company will add video to its paid business edition of Google Apps on Monday. In a way, Google is opening up a whole new category of online video: internal corporate video sharing.

Google Apps customers pay $50 per user per year for Gmail, Google Talk, Google Docs and other communication and collaboration tools (there is also a free version that doesn’t include customer support and APIs). Now, paid users can upload videos of up to 300 MB, with no time-length restrictions, for a total of 3GB per account and unlimited video views.

There are existing enterprise video delivery vendors aplenty, including Kontiki, Cisco and Thomson, but their tools are used for top-down communication and training. Google thinks there’s an opportunity for easy video sharing — á la YouTube — between team members for applications such as ad hoc training, product demos, and team building. Except, unlike YouTube, not just anyone will be able see these videos — access will be restricted to specific employees.

However, Google isn’t including live broadcasting or video conferencing — perhaps the most obvious and best-used video tools at most enterprises. Google acquired video-conferencing software from a Swedish company called Marratech last April, but it hasn’t made it available to enterprise customers and it’s not a part of this product. Google is only offering on-demand streaming and downloads of clips.
Users can upload videos to what looks like the Google Video player, and team members can tag, star and comment on them. There are also new features designed for long-form video, such as thumbnails of key parts of a video so viewers can skip around. Each video will also be available as an embed, part of a Google gadget and as an MPEG-4 download.

It’s good that Google is trying to think creatively about how people work together, though I’m not sure how widespread use of this particular product will be. Video-sharing sites with privacy controls normally seem to be made for families with young kids, which is quite a different use-case than coworkers. So there may be a need for a tool like this.

“It’s no longer about trying to achieve feature parity with incumbent office solutions, it’s really about transforming collaboration,” said Kuan Yong, product manager for Google Video for business and YouTube developer APIs, in an interview last week. He also made a point of saying, “It’s really cloud computing that’s enabled us to do enterprise video in a form that’s so affordable, and in a way that just works.”

Revamped Google Picasa site identifies photo faces

Google wants to help you put a name to that face.
With a face recognition feature set to launch at noon PDT Tuesday, Google's Picasa Web Albums will help users label their photos with the names of subjects. That and other changes to the photo-sharing site are joined by a new beta version of the accompanying Picasa 3.0 photo-editing software.
The name tag feature groups like faces together to let users tag them with names a batch at a time. The "name tag" feature presents users with collections of photos with what it judges to be the same person, then lets them click a button to affix a name. Once photographic subjects are named, users can browse an album of that individual on the fly.

"Once you've started naming people, we'll start suggesting names for you based on similarity," said Mike Horowitz, Google's Picasa product manager. "The process of naming people is really addictive and tremendously fun."
Having tried the new service on dozens of photos, I wouldn't go that far. But it is a major advance in what I believe is a very important area, photo metadata.
Tagging is a powerful way to sort digital photographs. Photo albums are useful, but with rich tagging, people also can slice and dice their photo collection to show particular people, activities, or locations. Even with face recognition technology or other computer processing, the textual tags in photos are a far more reliable way for computers to understand image content.
And tags become even more powerful as photos are assembled into publicly accessible collections such as those at Yahoo's Flickr, Picasa, or Fox Interactive's Photobucket.

Eat your vegetables, exercise regularly, tag your photos
The problem with tagging is that it's a chore, so most people don't bother. But Picasa's name tag feature automates the process enough--and provides enough reason to use it--that I believe many users will take the tagging plunge.
Picasa editing software now lets users export movies with musical soundtrack to a file or YouTube. It took me less than 15 minutes to tag close to 200 faces in a set of more than 100 photos, and that included some start-up time such as figuring out how the system worked, establishing names for various common subjects, and correcting a few errors. The most impressive moments are when Picasa presents a large array of photos with the same face, and you can label them all with a single click.

I speak here from experience. I do tag my own photos--for example the 700 I took on a weeklong backpacking trip earlier this month--and something like Google's facial recognition assisting would have dramatically sped the process. It wouldn't help with other tags such as "swimming," "waterfall," or "Sierra tiger lily," but let's face it--people are the central feature in most people's photos.

Overall, Google's Picasa moves show that despite a long period of near-dormancy, Google still evidently is committed to the photography site and software.
However, Picasa overall still feels like a staid place to store photos, share them with friends, and maybe order prints. It doesn't match the vibrant community of Yahoo's Flickr. And though Flickr also has been slow to change, Yahoo has at least been nudging it in the right direction with additions such as online editing.

Face recognition blemishes
Picasa's name tags are helpful but imperfect. The feature failed to find faces in several photos where I thought the faces were reasonably obvious. It also thought my bicycle wheel's spokes and wife's ear were faces. One excusable error: it thought a mask in a mural was a face, though for some reason it didn't bother with a couple of real humans in the same mural.
"Our face-matching technology works best when a person is looking at the camera," Horowitz said. "There are a variety of factors that may limit our success in matching faces, including profile views and challenging lighting conditions like shadows."
The most annoying error was that during the initial period when I was adding names to the system, it somehow came up with three separate versions of me and two versions of my son, despite the fact that I entered the same name and e-mail address. I fixed it by telling Picasa my alter egos were erroneously labeled, at which point they re-entered the labeling pool and I assigned them to the remaining identity. Too bad I didn't notice the "merge" option until later.

Picasa users must specifically enable the name tag feature, and default name tags aren't shared publicly. Picasa users may only tag photos in their own account.
With the "name tag" feature, which users must specifically enable, Picasa presents groups of images sharing the same face. Users can label them with a person's name. Eventually users can click a tag to find shots of a particular subject in their photo collections,
The face recognition technology came to Google via its 2006 acquisition of Neven Vision, Horowitz said.
There are other changes coming to Picasa Web Albums (though a change to Google Photos isn't one of them, at least right now). One is an "explore" view that lets people browse the total collection of public Picasa photos. It lets people browse by popular tags, location, and peer at recent uploads. Another is the ability to e-mail photos to the service.

Picasa 3 beta
Google also plans to release a beta version of the Picasa 3 image-editing. It works on Windows, though a Google Labs version has been transmogrified to work on Linux via the Wine software layer. Horowitz wouldn't confirm whether a Mac OS X version is anything more than an idea: "Macs are important to us," he said. "We're always looking for new ways making sure our users are happy, so it's something we're looking at."

The new Picasa software brings several changes:
• A movie maker mode lets people combine photos with music to export movie versions of galleries to watch on a PC or upload to YouTube.
A collage mode in Picasa lets users create poster-size collections, sizing and placing each snapshot.• A new retouch brush lets people edit out skin blemishes and other trouble spots. And the tool can automatically fix red-eye problems caused by flash photography.

• A new collage mode lets users compile many photos into one composite image. This time, users get precise control over image placement for example by moving, rotating, and resizing photos, and the software can produce a high-resolution composite for poster-size prints.
• A photo viewer for quick slideshows, an option that during installation politely asks to own the file associations for JPEG, TIFF, raw images from higher-end cameras, and some other formats. The slideshow software can view PNG files, which is handy, but the editing software still can't, which is a significant limitation for me.
• Online synchronization. If photos have been uploaded from Picasa to the Web site, they can be edited later and the changes, including tags, are synchronized to the Web site. This is very handy since you might want to get images up quickly to share with friends then edit them later. Unfortunately, changes on the Web site aren't mirrored back to the PC, so all those name tags will stay put in the cloud for now.
